Sharing a book is a great way to stay connected while practicing social distance. Thank you to Pastor Jeff for recommending two books that we can read together during this time.

This Tender Land
A novel about four orphans on a life-changing odyssey during the Great Depression, from local bestselling author William Kent Krueger. It is an enthralling, big-hearted epic that shows how the magnificent American landscape connects us all, haunts our dreams, and makes us whole.

Miracles and Other Reasonable Things: A Story of Unlearning and Relearning God
A deeply moving and life-affirming account of wrestling with faith and God and finding miracles in the most unexpected places by Sarah Bessey.

Note: These links are to the Kindle versions of the books. Amazon has made shipping non-essentials like books a lower priority than shipping masks and medical equipment. Kindle versions or digital books from the library will be faster.

You can certainly read these on your own and know that other members of the Prince of Peace community are reading them, but we are inviting you to start a book club. Here’s a few tips for getting started:

Gather some people you think would like to read and discuss one of these books. Reach out to your small group. Friends or family. Neighbors. People you run or work or workout with. Or go wild and bring a mix of people who don’t know each other yet.

Find a way to get together. Zoom is the go-to tool these days but you don’t need to limit yourself. Telephones, Facebook groups and even letters work. You can find some ideas and links in Amy Oestreich’s post about keeping connected.

Set a schedule that works for everyone. Reading a chapter a week and discussing the chapter each week is an option. So is reading the whole book and having an epic discussion when everyone is done.

Have some discussion starters in your pocket. A good way to get the ball rolling is asking people what they liked and then what they had problems with or questions about. That might be enough to keep everyone talking. If you want something more, you’ll find links to discussion questions below.

Have fun! Remember the point isn’t to have the right answers, but to share ideas and time with others.
