How Are Plans for Construction Coming?

Our architects at Cuningham Group Architecture are working on construction drawings – the detailed plans that will be used to bid out our project in early spring. Construction drawings are now 75% complete and will be finished in April. We continue to meet with our architects to work out the details on everything from carpeting to wood finishes to mechanical systems to the ultimate scope of work. Construction has been delayed about a month as our architects work through changes in mechanical system design.

Once we have received construction bids in April, our Board will be asked to approve the final scope of the project for Phase 1. Currently it looks like the construction work will be done in at least two phases, with landscaping and parking lot improvements completed in a third phase.

Staging for construction is tentatively planned for May 15. Our ceremonial groundbreaking is scheduled for Sunday, June 3.

Proposed Phase 1 Includes:

  • construction of a main entrance with a grand staircase, fireplace lounge area, and a large new elevator
  • renovation of the lower level child care and hallway into a large gathering space with a new kitchen
  • renovation of the Community Room into new administrative offices
  • new preschool/family ministry area
  • new family ministry offices/small group space
  • construction of a basement

Depending on construction bids in April and total financial support from the congregation, Phase 1 may also include all or a portion of the new chapel space. Phase 1 is the most extensive of the entire construction project and the Board has capped this phase at $11M. When the chapel is complete, it will allow all of family ministry to be in a single building. At that point, everyone except Mission Outpost will move into the new space. Phase 1 adds about 5,000 square feet in the basement and nearly 40,000 square feet of new and renovated space. The chapel space would add just over 5,000 square feet of space. Phase 1 must be complete before work can begin on Phase 2. The current One Church Capital Campaign applies to Phase 1 costs.

Phase 2 will include:

  • a new Mission Outpost space
  • renovation of the Sanctuary
  • creation of music offices and rehearsal space
  • completion of the chapel space, if not done as a part of Phase 1

Phase 2 will require additional funding and a second capital campaign.

What Will Happen During Construction?

All Prince of Peace ministries will continue during construction, including weekly worship, Vacation Bible School, Worship Arts Camp, Family Ministry, Mission Outpost, support groups, weddings and funerals, small groups and Engage Bible Study.

Will there be impact? Absolutely! Our staff is already collaborating on the ways we can share space and logistics of moving to different space. Construction might change where some people park and how we move around and use our current space, but our staff is working on ways to ease the transition and help everyone – Prince of Peace disciples and guests – get where they need to go.

It is important to remember the disruption and confusion will be temporary. The results – One Church with One Vision under One Roof – will be long-lasting and will leave a legacy for future generations. This is the beginning of a very exciting adventure for us!
