For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help…A threefold cord is not quickly broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, 12b Life brings about some tough challenges. To face difficulties alone is enough to break one’s spirit. Scripture encourages us to lift each other up. A support group is a way to come along side one another for strength and encouragement during a time when we might rather isolate ourselves. We have many different types of support groups here at Prince of Peace such as, 12 Step Recovery Groups, Depression and Grief Support, Women’s Divorce Support, PFLAG, Parkinson’s Disease Support and Caregiver Support. We have support group brochures in various places in the church as well as a list on the support groups page of the website. I recently received a thank you letter expressing appreciation for the way one of our support groups provided healing during loss. The following is part of the letter: “About a year ago, my younger brother passed away. Though he had many health issues because of Downs Syndrome, he’d always been able to fight through. However, his heart finally gave out. Though this outcome wasn’t shocking, it was crushing to me just the same…he was truly my heart and soul, and we were the best of friends. Although I am not a member of Prince of Peace, I somehow heard about the Grief Support Group, made my way there and continued coming for months. I can’t begin to tell you the support and love I felt each week. I so appreciated the leaders and many individuals who came in each week and spoke to us – people who are professionals in the field of grief counseling, as well as people sharing their own personal experiences with grief. I just wanted to thank Prince of Peace for the invaluable care and support I received during a very difficult time and acknowledge the staff and volunteers for the wonderful program you provide for those of us working through our grief.” If you have any questions or a desire to talk further about any support you would like, please do not hesitate to contact me.
