Letting Go

Let’s lay aside every weight and sin that so easily entangles us…. – Hebrews 12:1

One of the things that I love about where I live is that bald eagles are plentiful. We frequently see them flying majestically overhead. Just the other day two of them landed on a branch just 25 yards from me and fought over a fish that one of them had caught. Amazing!

When I told my neighbor about that epic “battle on the branch” she told me that her parents had just returned from a cruise through Alaska where over 70% of the US eagle population lives. She also told me that while they were in Alaska they learned that the number one cause of death for bald eagles was drowning. Apparently if an eagle catches a big fish and that fish submerges, a hungry eagle may not let go. And if that eagles is pulled under the water it may drown.

I found that little factoid fascinating. And instructive. It made me wonder how many things we hold onto that hinder our growth in faith, drown us in guilt and shame and destroy our relationships. Things we could let go of but refuse to for one reason or another. A grudge. A bad attitude. An addictive behavior pattern.

That’s why the writer of Hebrews encourages us to “lay aside every weight and sin that so easily entangles us.” The Spirit not only convicts us but empowers us to let go and leave behind those things that drag us down and threaten to drown us.

What do you need to let go of in order to fly free?
