Do Not Judge

Do not judge… – Luke 6:37

I watched as dozens of bank swallows swooped above the water like a troop of acrobats, eating the insects that hovered on the lake’s surface.

Further out in the deep I watched as loons disappeared beneath the cold, dark water, hunting for fish. I entertained myself by guessing where they would surface again.

Each sought what it uniquely needed, in its own unique way. And neither felt the slightest need to judge the other.

And it dawned on me in the dawning light of day just how often I judge others for what they do without having the slightest idea of what they really need.

And as the sun crested the horizon it seemed to say that all creation needs the light of love and acceptance. We do not thrive in the shadows of judgment. Nor do we thrive casting shadows.

And so I pray that today I might meet people at both the surface and in the depths with the light of love and acceptance that is God’s delight to give and my joy to share.
