2019 Men’s trip to the Dominican Republic: Building By Prince of Peace Posted March 26, 2019 In Featured, Out 2019 Men’s trip to the Dominican Republic: Building2019-03-262019-03-26https://popmn.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/pop-logo_horizontal_color-e1473696608865.pngPrince of Peace Lutheran Churchhttps://popmn.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/img_6652.jpg200px200px 0 Written by Eric Elton In 2003, Men’s Ministry took its first trip to visit our mission partner in the Dominican Republic (DR), Doulos Discovery School. Our project was to build a playground, paid for by proceeds from the Prince of Peace Mega Sale. The playground was moved a couple of times, but finally wore out. Sixteen years later, during the last week of February 2019, 8 men from Prince of Peace went back to rebuild that playground. Our week was spent building a playground and 7 sets of bunk beds, but it was not all about building “stuff.” We spent time building relationships with the community by attending church on Sunday morning, visiting local restaurants and learning about the community of Jarabacoa. We also built great relationships with each other with much laughter and conversation. Each of us also worked on building our relationship with God. Morning quiet time with God was an important part of each day. Each evening, we would spend time in small group and reflect on God’s presence in our day in the DR – in the smiles and laughter of the kids, in the beauty of the land and we realized the gift that Doulos brings to the community. We also discussed how God was in our lives all of the time, even in the mundane of normal life back home. Several of the men sponsor kids at Doulos. One of the highlights of the week is to visit their sponsorship family. The evening is spent eating, playing games, sharing stories through an interpreter. For many of the guys, this was a highlight of the week. Why? When you make this visit, you are able to bridge culture, economic differences and find a different kind of joy. Life is simpler in the DR, which is not necessarily easier. We saw the importance of relationship in this culture. Ultimately, we were all grateful to God for the opportunity to serve on this trip. Gentlemen reading this … consider coming next year. God may be calling you! Eric Elton is the Mission Outreach Director at Prince of Peace.
