Under God's Wings
“…under his wings you will find refuge…” Psalm 91:4
For many, this Psalm is a refuge and a balm and we have read the first four verses often:
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High,
Who abides in the shadow of the Almighty,
will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress:
My God, in whom I trust.”
For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence;
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
We go through life faithfully believing that God is always protecting us and there is really nothing we have to do to receive that protection. We live each day taking for granted what these verses really mean for us. And, we live understanding that it is our faith that makes this work.
But, there will come a time in each of our lives that we need to abide under God’s protection; to wait in the shadow of his shelter; to hang on to His constant strength and use the shield that He provides because we aren’t able to do anything else.
When these times happen we learn that it isn’t our faithfulness that carries us. We are carried because God is faithful for us. When we cannot pray and only endure, God provides others to pray for us. He uses the people who love us to be our care givers and to provide and protect us. He calls on our faithfulness to accept these gifts that He is providing as we abide under the shelter of His wings.
Each time we reach out to help another, we are reminded we are also are the ones who dwell under the shelter of the Most High. Because of His faithfulness we experience His gracious love by both giving and receiving.
Lord, on this journey you use us to be your hands and feet for each other to carry your faithful promise that you are our protection and shield. Amen
