South Metro Meal Packing Event Reaches Goal of 3,000,000 Meals.
Note: the following story was submitted by Emily Gunderson, on behalf of the South Metro Meal Packing Event
This month, over 10,000 volunteers from all backgrounds, races and religions, came together for a common cause: to pack 3,009,312 nutritious, life-saving meals for hungry, malnourished and starving children around the world. Food packed at this event is already on its way to Nicaragua and Liberia, where an estimated 8,200 children will be fed for one year.
This community event was the largest, single mobile meal packing event in the history of Feed My Starving Children. It was a true ecumenical effort, thanks to 18 faith communities who partnered together to secure sponsors and raise the money needed to cover the cost of the food as well as recruit the huge number of volunteers needed to pack food at 18 shifts scheduled over 6 days. Thank you to these local churches: Berean Baptist, Casa de Oracion, Chapel Hill Church, Christus Victor Lutheran, Discover Church, Faith Covenant, Lily of the Valley, Lord of Life Lutheran, Presbyterian Church of the Apostles, Prince of Peace Lutheran, Redeemer Lutheran Church, River Hills Methodist Church, Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church, South Suburban Evangelical Free Church, St. John’s Catholic Church, St. John Neumann, St. Thomas Becket, Trinity Evangelical Free Church. A special thank you to Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church for hosting the event.
“Around 4pm on Friday, Paul Dopkins, Team Leader from Feed My Starving Children, told his team that is was mathematically impossible to hit our goal,” said Eric Elton, Director of Outreach at Prince of Peace. “But the two Friday night shifts exceeded all expectations, and then by extending a couple shifts on Saturday, we were able to hit our goal.” About 1,000,000 meals were packed alone between 8 AM – 7:30 PM on Saturday, breaking a record for the fastest one million meals that FMSC has ever produced.
Feed My Starving Children is a nonprofit Christian organization, based in Coon Rapids, who encourages children and adults to hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children, with the meals shipped to nearly 70 countries around the world.
