Grace, Mercy and Peace

Over the past year I have been thinking about grace, mercy and peace and what they mean for me in the Kingdom of God. Today, is a glorious summer day, the sun is shining, flowers are blooming, most of the weeds are under control and the vegetable garden is beginning to produce; I may say that God has graced us with a beautiful day, was merciful in providing good weather and surrounded me with the peace of creation.

Somehow, I don’t think these are the correct usages of these three words. In our English language, we are good at redefining the meanings and usages of words. So, what about grace, mercy and peace and how can they translate my existence in the Kingdom of God?

A definition of grace is the kindness God bestows on us and forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ; it is getting something we absolutely don’t deserve. Mercy on the other hand is His kindness and compassion towards the poor and afflicted; not getting something we do deserve. Both grace and mercy involve kindness and favor. Mercy is deliverance from judgment and grace is extending kindness to the unworthy. Peace for a person of faith provides inner satisfaction, contentment and serenity.

We often look at grace and mercy as New Testaments gifts. But God’s grace and mercy was bestowed throughout all time. David speaks to God in Psalm 51:1-2, “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.” This type of plea is asking God to withhold the judgment we deserve and instead provide us the forgiveness we have not earned. For example, we can find God’s mercy and grace throughout Exodus, Esther and the Beatitudes. God has always bestowed grace and mercy upon His people. Most of the time inner peace evades us.

As I relish in these gifts that God has bestowed upon me, I see that I can only have inner peace if I pass on kindness, forgiveness and compassion to others. I know I fall short, but I rely on seeking God’s guidance and teachings to guide my path and release me from my worldly attitude.

Lord, help us to take your gifts of grace and mercy and pass them on to provide inner peace for ourselves and to those we encounter. Amen
