Generous in Every Way

by Jane Victorey and Beth Beaty

God can pour on the blessings in astonishing ways so that you’re ready for anything and everything, more than just ready to do what needs to be done. As one psalmist puts it,

He throws caution to the winds,
giving to the needy in reckless abandon.
His right-living, right-giving ways
never run out, never wear out.

This most generous God who gives seed to the farmer that becomes bread for your meals is more than extravagant with you. He gives you something you can then give away, which grows into full-formed lives, robust in God, wealthy in every way, so that you can be generous in every way, producing with us great praise to God. 2 Corinthians 8-11

We live in a culture that tells us we are self-made, that we worked hard for everything we have and that we need to hold on to it tightly. But this scripture reminds us that what we have is not ours to begin with. All we have is from God and it was given to us so we could give it away.

We may work for a paycheck but the talents we bring to that work, the opportunities we have, the skills we develop – even the ability to work at all – come from God. God expects us to share everything we have been given. If we look at our life as something we have created, sharing can feel like an obligation. But when we see our life as a gift given freely and abundantly, generosity is the natural response.

As we move into fall and return to our regular schedules at home, work, school and church, let’s notice and celebrate God’s extravagant generosity. Let’s be grateful for the abundance we have received and find ways to share that abundance with God’s people.

When we pool our resources – not just our money, but our talents, time and energy – we can transform the world.
