Candle Power

By Paul Gueldner, a Lay Minister for Christ

Sometimes, we feel that the world should revolve around us. We should be the center of attention, even if we don’t really seek that as our end goal in life. More often, I find that I ache for God’s people. I know people are going through hard times and I grieve for their losses and their trials. Loss of job, loss of loved ones, loss of self-worth in the midst of financial insecurity. No, I know deep down in my heart that we are here to pick each other up, to care about each other, to take care of one another. Especially at this time of year, when everyone is so festive, it is difficult to bear these losses.

One of my fondest childhood Christmas memories was attending candlelight services at church. Not only did we get to stay up late, we also were privileged to hold that tiny candle just like everyone else while the lights were turned off in the church. The only light was from our candles, but, do you know how much light 300 or more candles can produce? Then, we would sing “Silent Night” without accompaniment. The sound of those voices still gives me “goose bumps”.

So, if your world seems a bit dark at the moment, and you need something to hold onto, think of a candle. Its small light will light up any room or dark place. In this hurried time of year, slow down, keep your candle burning, and find another person who also has a candle burning. Perhaps, just perhaps, your lights together, will make both of your lives brighter.

My prayer is that, in some small way today, I can make a difference in someone’s life. Share a new toy with Toys for Tots; fulfill a wish from the Wish Tree, hand out some joy, food, clothing, and love through the Mission Outpost and other outlets. Sing a Christmas Carol or two in a lonely place. Another song that comes to mind, even though it is not a Christmas Carol, brings back many memories for me and helps me to cope with everyday trials and hardships.

This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine, let it shine, all the time, let it shine.

If you remember no other prayer, simply pray, “Father, protect me this day from evil and send someone with a candle my way. Thank you, Lord.”

God’s blessings to you in this Christmas Season.
