Beyond Blessed to be Part of their Lives

By Laura Pettis

“God has given each of us a gift from His great variety of spiritual gifts.  Use them well to serve one another.”  1 Peter  4:10

I’ve always loved serving others.  I owe a great deal of thanks to my parents who instilled in my brother and me the value of serving others.  They modeled this daily through their own vocation as teachers and through their countless hours of volunteer work with children and families in their church and in their community.

As an elementary-teacher-turned-stay-at-home-mom, it was natural for me to become involved with Children’s Ministry at Prince of Peace when our oldest daughter was old enough to be part of Children’s Ministry; I loved working with children and I loved the Lord.  I first began volunteering at Vacation Bible School.  When Emma became a Kindergartner, I decided to lead her Crosswalk group.  I felt called not only to nurture her faith but to share the love that I felt for Christ with the little ones who were a part of our group each week.  As I got to know each of these children individually and we learned and grew in faith together, a strong bond was established.  One year turned into many years with this group.  We acted out Bible stories, we memorized scripture, we met in each other’s’ homes for parties and picnics, and we served in and outside of Prince of Peace together.  Each meeting, each class and each experience in faith grew us closer to each other and closer to God.

I have continued to lead my daughter’s small group and will begin my 11th year with them this year.  Wednesday nights are special for us.  We come together to share  burdens, concerns, joys and praises in a safe and nurturing place where everyone feels supported and loved.  We laugh; we get silly and sometimes a little crazy. The girls in my small group think that they come to learn something from me, but I know that each week, they teach me much more than I teach them.

I am beyond blessed to be a part of their lives and to share in their spiritual journey as young women of God.  Each week they bring me such joy.  It is rewarding to listen to them and watch them grow in their faith through our studies, discussion and in our serving together.  Their excitement for God is contagious.

My prayer over the years has been that each one of the children I lead will find their spiritual gift(s) and use to them serve God and others. Now, I am witnessing just that. My girls desire to serve God in new ways as they move out beyond Prince of Peace.  It is amazing to see how God has worked in their lives and the Holy Spirit has stirred a desire in them to use those gifts and talents to share God’s love.
